Ryan Chan

Disaster Action Team Volunteer

I think volunteering in Red Cross means that I get to be out there with a team of amazing volunteer to help those who in need with the best I can. It’s something that I really enjoy to do.”

His nominator, Nedan Rambo, says, “Ryan Chan began volunteering in 2012, and since then he has become not only one of our youngest Disaster Action Team leaders, but one our most consistent ones. He became a Disaster Action Team trainee and after going out on a few calls, he began accumulating every training course that he could. He was made a DAT member in 2013 and was promoted to team Leader just three months after that. Ryan spends most of his time as a nursing student, yet he still finds the time to sign up for more shifts every week than any other two volunteers combined. In the past few years he has helped countless families working on DAT calls, and even helping at a shelter.  His example has made him a role model to other potential Disaster Action Team members.

Ryan hasn’t just been eager to give, he has been eager to teach, and bring in new volunteers to help bolster the program. Volunteers who have been fortunate enough to go out with Ryan have described him as very supportive and eager to see trainees grow into future DAT leaders. Ryan also finds the time to act as the vehicle captain for the Disaster vehicle in Pasadena. He maintains the vehicle, ensuring that not only is it fully stocked and ready to drive, but he washes it to make sure it is presentable. His dedication, humble nature, and friendly personality make him an invaluable part of Disaster Services in the Eastern Territory, and we are proud to have him here.”
