“I request that during that month (March) our people rededicate themselves to the splendid aims and activities of the Red Cross.”
– President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Proclaiming March as Red Cross Month, in 1943.
Every eight minutes, the American Red Cross brings help and hope to people in need. Whether you donate funds, donate blood, take a class or volunteer, we depend on your support to make a difference in communities across the country. Every Red Crosser is a real-life hero!
Each year since 1943, the President of the United States proclaims March is “Red Cross Month.” We use this month as a chance to honor and celebrate the hard work our volunteers, blood donors and financial donors do throughout the year— the everyday heroes who help us fulfill our mission.
This March, we encourage you to uncover your inner hero, by choosing one or more of the options below and joining us for our 65th annual Red Cross Month!

Councilmember Gil Cedillo Proclaims March is Red Cross Month in Los Angeles
On Wednesday, Councilmember Cedillo declared American Red Cross Month in Los Angeles. In 1943, the President of the United States proclaimed March as Red Cross Month, calling on Americans to make a donation, volunteer, take a class or give blood. Across the country and around the world, the American Red Cross responds to disasters big and small. In fact, every eight minutes the organization responds to a community disaster, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. It collects nearly 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply. The American Red Cross Los Angeles Region uses this opportunity to educate communities about the services they provide to the public each and every day.
