More than a dozen Red Crossers spent three festive hours on the evening of Monday, Dec. 7, at the Red Cross L.A. Region headquarters in West L.A. writing personal notes of gratitude to members of the military, veterans and their families as part of the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes Campaign. The Red Cross will deliver the cards during the holidays.

Card signing parties will be held the rest of this week from 5-8 p.m. at different Red Cross chapters (check the Volunteer Connection calendar for dates and times.) Below are comments from participants about why they participated in the card signing event:

“This is the least I could do for our service members. This is the true meaning of Christmas.” Vicky Shere, Service to the Armed Forces Volunteer Caseworker, West L.A.

“I’m here to honor our service members and their sacrifices, especially this time of year.” Grant Graves, Disaster Services Vsvetlana, ericolunteer, Santa Monica

“These people are making big sacrifices for us to enjoy our holidays, and I want to make sure their holiday is special.” Kelsy Stoeppel, West L.A.

“We can’t help but be grateful to our service members – the dangerous work they do – especially during this difficult time.” Dean Stewart, International Services volunteer (32-year volunteer)

group“I always like to support the Services to the Armed Forces projects.” Joey Morales, Disaster Services Volunteer, Mission Hills

“I’m here to show support for our military members and veterans,” Nancy Din, AmeriCorps member

“Activities like this are important in creating solidarity between civilians and service members. When troops are deployed across the water, their fight is for more than our freedom; they are battling for unity around the world. And most people forget they are fighting this battle alone, away from their loved ones. This helps to remind them what they’re fighting for.” Bohannon Orr, West L.A., served in the U.S. Air Force
